With a lifelong love of animals and a strong creative streak I am now very happy to be producing ceramic sculptures of animals.
Each piece is individually made, unique and created hollow, manouevred and coaxed into the required shape. The pose and character of the animal reveals itself as the piece progresses.
I use a robust, coarsely grogged clay for the larger animals intended for garden
display, and a finer white clay for the smaller, more delicate indoor pieces. Everything is fired to stone ware temperature and coloured mainly with oxides as I prefer to let the clay speak for itself rather than smother it with glaze.
My aim is to express the character of each animal without getting too bogged down with photorealistic modelling. If the finished piece can trigger a smile of recognition so much the better.
